Firm trucking with high-tech dispatch center
    Article Date: 2008-07-02 11:59:06

Posted by Melissa Burden | The Flint Journal January 24, 2008 17:12PM Categories: Autos, Community: Flint

It's an industry where miles and minutes are king.

"It's a game of pennies," said Jeff Berlin, executive vice president and chief financial officer of E.L. Hollingsworth & Co., a Flint-based trucking firm. "It's a game of cents per mile."

And the roughly 30 dispatchers who work around the clock for the trucking company now have a high-tech center. They track and monitor 420 trailers and nearly 300 trucks for the company and its customers, primarily in the automotive industry.

The new $70,000 renovation -- featuring a tiered design, open room and 6- by 4-foot screens and 50-inch plasma TVs -- is a far cry from the cubicles where they used to work.

The dispatch center, which was garage space, features screens that show such things as a weather map; views of the company's truck yards in Flint, Burton, Dearborn and Lebanon, Tenn.,; and one that alerts dispatchers of drivers who may be getting close to U.S. Department of Transportation limits for driving hours.

Another screen, a large U.S. map, shows dispatchers where drivers are. Color-coded dots indicate if they are running on time or behind schedule or are empty and available to pick up freight.

"I'll put that up against anything in the state of Michigan right now," Berlin said. "There's just a lot of technology in trucking these days."

The company said the dispatch center gives the company a competitive advantage and helps them provide exceptional service.

Years ago, magnets and markers and a white board were used to track trucks as drivers called in by pay phone.

Trucks also are equipped with satellite tracking that can instantly transmit information about what's on a truck and when it arrives at a client's doorstep, said company President Chris Shepard.

The company, with roots dating to 1924, also is expanding by hiring truck drivers; three job fairs are scheduled in the next few weeks.

The firm also has its own trucking school and employs about 400 workers at its various divisions.

A 2005 study done for the American Trucking Associations indicated a shortage of 111,000 long-haul drivers by 2014 and showed a shortage of about 20,000 drivers in 2005.

The trucking industry faces high turnover rates, with the national average as high as 150 percent, Berlin said.

Hollingsworth's turnover rate is less than half that, he said, adding that the company gives its drivers good home time and benefits and pays well.

Firm drivers can earn $35,000 to $40,000 a year starting out, plus benefits, and some drivers make $60,000, Berlin said.

Five-year driver Steve McMillan, 30, of Schoolcraft just started a job with the company's Hollingsworth Expedited Lane Partner, or HELP, division, driving a route daily from Kalamazoo to the Grand Rapids area.

"They offered me the job where I can be home every night," McMillan said.

MUNDY TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -- (01/24/08)-- The bad economy and unemployment problem in Mid-Michigan are driving attendance at a Genesee County job fair.

Recruiters are at Mundy Township's Gateway Centre looking for truck drivers.

For experienced drivers, E.L. Hollingsworth wants at least one year of experience with a CDL Class A license.

The company will help people without experience get started. Bernie Nice is the company's training director. "(We) help them seek out grants if they qualify, and get them lined up for training, for CDL training. And every person we train, we hire."

Experienced drivers can get on the road within 7-to-14 days, depending upon how long it takes to check out the person's background.

The company runs regional routes with drivers out for two or three days at a time.

If you weren't able to make today's job fair, Neace says applicants can head to 3039 Air Park Drive in the Bishop Air Park Plaza for an application.

Bring your drivers license and Social Security card. Be prepared to fill out an application.

E.L. Hollingsworth Signs with Transportation Costing Group (March 19, 2008)
    Article Date: 2008-07-01 10:22:04

Rockville, Maryland. - March 19, 2008- Transportation Costing Group® (TCG®), specialists in activity-based profitability and cost analysis for the transportation industry, today announced that Flint, Michigan-based E. L. Hollingsworth & Co. has adopted its Truckload Cost Information SystemTM (TL/CIS®) and is using this advanced solution in conjunction with a new interface to TMWSuite®, written for TCG by TMW Systems, Inc. TCG's Profitability Management Tools® used along with TMWSuite® enterprise transportation software is enabling the provider of truckload, LTL/partial shipment, expedited ground, logistics and warehousing services to benefit from better cost anlysis and profitability measurement.

"We chose the TL/CIS solution and asked for an interface with TMW to fill a void in our reporting structure," said Jeff Berlin, Executive Vice President/CFO of E.L. Hollingsworth. "Our enterprise management system has all the data we need to analyze our most and least profitable lanes and customers, but TCG offers the ability to accurately interpret and analyze that data in a very user-friendly platform. TCG's decision to have TMW develop an interface has added value to a solution that produces meaningful results and gives us a distinct competitive advantage."

Providing value for TMW customers is very important, noted John Parker, director of inside sales at TMW Systems. "When E.L. Hollingsworth made its needs known we were ready and willing to support them and develop the interface they requested," he related. "Our goal remains to provide the best solutions to meet a customer's specific needs."

Jeff Berlin also reported that TCG was also responsive to a special request from E.L. Hollingsworth. "We're dedicated to consistently meeting our customer's expectations," he explained. "Before we even started using TL/CIS one shipper asked for a rate adjustment and with TCG's help we were able to access profitability data on their business for the previous nine months. That helped us negotiate with this customer, adjust rates for part of their business and determine if we should accept other loads from them. Without that help we couldn't distinguish if this business was profitable or not. With TL/CIS we are more competitive and can expect to realize sustained growth and profitability."

"The TL/CIS solution and new standard TMWSuite interface we have provided E.L. Hollingsworth is designed to give the carrier the ability to gain all of the advantages of having accurate and efficient profitability management tools," said Jack Jones, TCG vice president. "The diversity of the operations of this company and the ability of our system to provide profitability analyses based on actual activity, costs and results provides valuable information for them as they make key decisions about how to proceed with specific business opportunities. E.L. Hollingsworth is a great example of the flexibility our solutions can provide."

Robert Coleman, 33 year veteran of E.L. Hollingsworth and Company
    Article Date: 2008-06-26 15:40:41

If you want to know the history about Hollingsworth, you need to seek out Robert and have a conversation with him! He has been here since the beginning. He started with "Old Man Holly" on July 3, 1974 and worked at the original building located at the corner of Saginaw Street & 5th Avenue, which now is part of U of M's campus. He then worked for Morrie Wyman, who owned "Wyman Pilot Service" at Oakland Airport, and is currently running a van for HELP.

He says he has seen lots of changes with the company, and was one of the original people who came and sited out the current location for our Flint Headquarters. Robert says back in the day, the company was called E.L. Hollingsworth/Yellow Cab. And he actually drove those "yellow cabs" around.

Believe it or not, Robert is 60 (looking good) and having a ball in life. His main hobby is Music; as in managing groups. He managed "Ready for the World" and designed all the wardrobe for "New Kids on the Block" thru their career. He likes to ride his Harley, and spend time with his grandkids. He has a Daughter and Son, and five grandkids. Robert used to spend time fishing with our wonderful (and dearly missed) Larry Brown back in the day, but doesn't get around to it much anymore.

When asked what he would do if he won a million dollars, his reply was "nothing much" it wouldn't last a year. He would give $1 to all his buddies (including me.) to go buy a lottery ticket, and set up college funds for his grandkids. I am still working on him to get him to give me more than $1.. If he wins!

It was nice to chat with you & get to know you Robert! Keep up the great work. -Connie Lyons, Editor
